SAPD DWI Enforcement Operations
SAPD runs dedicated DWI enforcement operations on the River Walk entertainment corridor, downtown San Antonio, and along IH-10 and IH-35 through Bexar County. DPS Troopers patrol IH-35 through Bexar County year-round for DWI enforcement. San Antonio’s active downtown nightlife, military installation proximity, and major events generate among the highest DWI arrest volumes in South Texas. Early morning weekend hours following the close of River Walk bars are peak enforcement periods.
When and Where San Antonio DWI Arrests Are Most Common
River Walk and downtown corridor. The River Walk and surrounding downtown entertainment areas see the highest concentration of SAPD DWI enforcement, particularly Thursday through Saturday nights. SAPD has active patrol specifically targeting the bar close hours from approximately 2 to 4 AM.
IH-35 through Bexar County. DPS Troopers conduct year-round DWI enforcement on IH-35 from the Bexar County line through downtown San Antonio. The IH-35 / IH-10 interchange and surrounding corridors are frequent enforcement points.
IH-10 east and west. Both IH-10 east toward the AT&T Center area and IH-10 west generate regular DWI arrest activity, particularly following events at the AT&T Center.
Loop 1604 and surrounding suburban corridors. As San Antonio has expanded, Loop 1604 and Culebra Road / Bandera Road have become active DWI enforcement corridors in the northwest quadrant of Bexar County.
Special enforcement periods. Fiesta, Spurs playoff games, major concerts at the AT&T Center, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, New Year’s Eve, and Fourth of July all generate heightened DWI enforcement operations by SAPD, Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies, and DPS simultaneously.
What High-Volume Enforcement Means for Your Defense
High-volume enforcement operations put pressure on officers to identify DWI indicators quickly. That pressure produces stops that are legally questionable when scrutinized against specific dashcam footage. An officer conducting their fifth DWI stop of the night on the River Walk may characterize driving behavior more aggressively than what the video actually shows. The gap between the written report and the dashcam is exactly where our San Antonio DWI defense attorneys build suppression arguments.
