IH-35 — The Primary Drug Enforcement Corridor in Bexar County
IH-35 through Bexar County is the primary drug trafficking enforcement corridor in South Texas. DPS Troopers, Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies, and SAPD units all conduct drug interdiction operations along IH-35 from the Bexar County southern line through downtown San Antonio and north toward Schertz and New Braunfels. IH-35 is a designated drug trafficking corridor under state and federal interdiction programs. Drug arrest volumes on IH-35 in Bexar County are among the highest in Texas.
IH-10 East and West
IH-10 east through Bexar County toward Houston and IH-10 west toward El Paso are also actively patrolled by DPS Troopers for drug interdiction. The IH-10 / IH-35 interchange in central San Antonio is a frequent enforcement point. Drug stops on IH-10 in Bexar County follow the same Fourth Amendment framework as IH-35 stops.
US-90 and US-281
US-90 through Bexar County west toward Eagle Pass and US-281 south toward the Rio Grande Valley are also active enforcement routes for drug interdiction, particularly for trafficking activity originating at the border. These routes see consistent DPS and BCSO patrol activity.
The Fourth Amendment Analysis Is the Starting Point on Every Drug Case
Every drug arrest in San Antonio begins with a traffic stop. Under Art. 38.23 and Rodriguez v. United States, that stop must have a legal basis independent of any intent to search for drugs. A DPS Trooper or SAPD officer who uses a minor traffic violation as a pretext to conduct a drug interdiction stop — and who cannot produce specific, articulable facts supporting the original stop — has conducted an unlawful stop. Any drugs found are suppressible. No valid stop, no evidence, no case. See our IH-35 drug charges page.
Drug Charges in Bexar County Courts
Drug possession, controlled substance, trafficking, and paraphernalia charges are all prosecuted by the Bexar County District Attorney’s office at Cadena-Reeves. The charge level depends on the substance and quantity — marijuana possession is a Class B or A misdemeanor, while larger quantities of controlled substances are state jail or higher felonies.
